Welcome to The Association of Laser Users

What is AILU?

AILU is a well-established, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by and for the laser community. AILU is the leading organisation dedicated to meeting the needs of laser users.

It is a UK-based organisation with members extending across five continents. Members include the main UK players in manufacturing industry, job shops and research organisations as well as manufacturers and suppliers of lasers and laser-related equipment and services.

Background

The Association was formed in 1995 and is recognised worldwide as unique in the high level of practical advice it offers on technical and business matters related to laser applications in manufacturing. It is a leader in fostering co-operation and collaboration within the laser community, promoting best practice in industrial laser materials processing and allied technologies and supports the maintenance and improvement of standards for laser safety and performance.

AILU's Laser User Groups

AILU has a number of Laser User Groups please look at their details here. Groups are expanding as members request additional areas of interests to be concentrated on in these focus groups.

Medical Group

Medical GroupThrough its involvement in the Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), AILU has taken a major step towards expanding into the growing medical sector with the launch of the Medical Group. A workshop to address medical sector issues marked the launch with the support of the Photonics KTN and in partnership with the Health Technologies KTN, in November 2007. For more information see our information page, to download a Medical Group brochure here. For further information look at the webpage here.

Job Shop Group

Job Shop GroupAILU's most energetic Special Interest Group (SIG) is the Job Shop Group within which subcontract laser-based engineering companies organise their own events, surveys and a website forum. For more information see our Job Shop information page.

Market Development Group

Design for Manufacturing logoWithin AILU's other SIG, the Market Development Group, members are working to encourage the greater use of laser in manufacturing. It is this group that is responsible for the Design for Laser Manufacture website at www.designforlasermanufacture.com. For more information see our Market Development Group information page, to download a Design for Laser Manufacture brochure go here.

Micro:nano Group

The engineering of micro features is key to the technical and commercial success of many mass-produced components ranging from photovoltaic cells, inkjet print heads and flat panel displays, to MEMS components and disposable medical instruments. It is to address the special needs of this burgeoning sector that AILU launched the Micro:Nano Group. For more information see our Micro:nano Group information page, to download a Micro:nano brochure click here

Products and Process Innovation Group

The aim of the Products and Process Innovation Group is to provide a focus for universities and other organisations involved in laser and/or laser materials processing development and/or research, to identify their common needs and create the possibility of joint initiatives and activities with industrial laser users. For further information look at the webpage here.

Photonics KTN Laser Networks

Thanks to support from the Photonics KTN, the Association of Laser Users (AILU) has been able to establish three Special Interest Groups (SIGs): Medical, Micro:Nano and Product and Process Innovation (PPI).  Read the full success story here.
