Through its involvement in the Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), AILU has taken a major step towards expanding into the growing medical sector with the launch of the Medical Group.

Events

May 2008 Event Flyer

A workshop to address medical sector issues marked the launch with the support of the Photonics KTN and in partnership with the Health Technologies KTN was held in November 2007.

Events in 2008 for the Medical Group are 22/05/08 (Cork), 27/08/08 at Photon 08 (Edinburgh) and 16/10/08 Photonex (Stoneleigh Park Near Coventry).

The first Medical Group event in 2008 took place in Cork, Ireland on 22nd May 2008.  See events listing for full details of the programme. It was a very successful day with over sixty delegates, a review of the event in Cork is available here.

Laser is the Tool

From household electronics to security holograms, lasers play a significant and positive role in everyday life. Anna O'Neil of AILU examines their extensive use in medical technology.

From their uses as ray guns in science fiction and being used to threaten Mr Bond in Goldfinger, lasers have always been considered an object of suspicion in the world of fiction. However, without them, many devices that we take for granted in the modern world would not exist. For example, CD and DVD players, barcode scanners in the supermarket and the production of holograms as security features on our credit cards all require lasers to exist. Lasers in the medical arena have innumerable benign uses, from their application in device manufacture to surgical operations. ... more
